Give us eccentricity! Infuse us with effervescence! Shower these days in kooky delights!

Are we not thirsting for practical escapism?

Diana Vreeland’s imaginative, inimitable β€œWhy Don’t You” column ran in Harper’s Bazaar during her tenure as fashion editor from 1936 to 1962. It was a whimsical collection of suggestions that prompted (dared!) readers to embrace creativity, to think audaciously, and wander into the jungle of eccentricity, even. Go on, darling, make the bold choice today.

I’ve been rather romanced by the unfurling of spring life this week. The world is popping up new shades of green at every turn. And every day seems to burst with fresh wonder. It got me thinking that spring is quite the show-off. Winter, she is austere, minimalist, pared back, monastic. And then, just like that, nature picks out fuschia! Of the mud she manifests carnelian and cerise. Yes, boldness is wafting though the air on the wings of pollen, encouraging my tweak on Vreeland’s theme. Swapping β€œYou” for β€œWe,” let’s try on zest for size.
